Arizona CCW Renewal Requirements

An Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW) is valid for 5 years. Arizona permit holders may renew their permit up to 90 days before the expiration date listed on their permit card. If you submit your renewal greater than 91 days, AZDPS will return your application and you must resubmit and pay the renewal again once you’re in the appropriate time-frame. The current Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) renewal application processing fee is $43.

For renewals, you are not required to complete another firearms safety training course. New fingerprints are not required. However, all renewal applicants must undergo and clear another FBI background check before approval. 

Arizona CCW renewal applications may be submitted online or by mail. Online renewal is highly recommended and typically the fastest and most convenient option. Applicants may pay the renewal fee of $49.88 online using a credit or debit card. You may upload any required supporting documents. Accepted file formats include PDF and JPEG files with a maximum file size of 5 MB.

How to Renew Your Arizona CCW Permit Online

Online renewal is the preferred method for most Arizona CCW permit holders because it is faster, easier, and reduces the likelihood of application errors.

To Renew Online:

1. Complete the AZDPS CCW renewal application online through Permitium.

2. Upload a copy of your Arizona Driver’s License or another form of government-issued identification. It helps to include a copy of your current Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit (but not required).

3. Pay the $49.88 renewal fee (credit card & service fees are included).

4. Submit your application to AZDPS and receive an automated email confirmation.

Once submitted, your application will undergo an FBI background check before approval. You will receive an automated email, text (if you opted for text messaging), and a phone message notification once you are approved. Your new permit card should arrive within 7-10 business days in the mail. 

How to Renew Your Arizona CCW Permit by Mail

If you choose to renew by mail, make sure you download the most current Arizona DPS Renewal Application. Many outdated renewal applications remain available online, and submitting an outdated application may result in processing delays and rejections. The renewal application will simply be returned to you.

Helpful Tips Completing The Application:

• Use black ink.

• Write legibly.

• Complete all required field boxes. Be sure you answer all the questions. Then sign and date your application.

• Provide a photocopy of your Arizona Driver’s License or another form of government-issued identification. It helps to include a photocopy of your current Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. If required, include copies of the required supporting documents.

Payment must be made by cashier’s check or money order payable to AZ DPS in the amount of $43. Personal checks are not accepted and may result in your application being returned.

For your convenience, you may also purchase a $43 money order at any United States Postal Service (USPS) location using cash or debit card (only applies to purchasing a money order). Please note there is a small service fee around $2 for purchasing a money order at USPS. This will save you time and may be done in-person when you mail your packet to AZDPS.

Overnight postage and signature confirmation are not required and can be costly. However, certified mail postage is recommended so you have a tracking number to ensure it was delivered successfully and in a timely manner. Stamps provide no tracking and sometimes applications do get lost and never make it to AZDPS for processing.

Arizona CCW Renewal Processing Times

Processing times vary depending on application volume and the time required to complete the FBI background check. AZDPS renewal application processing may take up to 75 days.

Once approved, your new Arizona CCW permit card will be mailed directly to you. Typically your new permit card should arrive within 7-10 business days. But AZDPS recommends waiting up to 30 days to arrive by mail. Sometimes the delay may be on the delivery by USPS. 

It is important to understand that Arizona does not issue temporary permits or pre-approval documents while your renewal application is being processed. If your permit expires before Arizona DPS completes the renewal process, your permit remains expired until your new permit card arrives in the mail.

If you were issued a blue and white permit card before, there is a newly designed Arizona CCW permit card (resembles an Arizona driver’s license) and it will include a new permit number. Once your new permit is issued, your previous permit card with the previous permit number is no longer valid.

Arizona CCW Grace Period

Arizona provides a 60-day grace period after your permit expiration date. If your permit has expired but you are still within the 60-day grace period, you may submit a renewal application and continue through the standard renewal process. If you are more than 61 days past your expiration date, AZDPS requires that you to reapply.

What Happens If Your Arizona CCW Permit Has Expired?

If your permit expired more than 61 days, you must reapply as a new applicant to obtain a new Arizona CCW Permit.

Here Are The Requirements:

• A new application submission.

• Payment of the AZDPS application processing fee of $60.

• New fingerprints must be submitted. They may be done electronically for $8-$10. Or, you may submit (2) physical fingerprint cards on FBI FD-258 cards. They must be rolled by a certified fingerprint technician. But the electronic fingerprints are highly recommended for faster approval and processing. Physical fingerprint cards often get kicked back because they may not be properly completed. For example the fingerprints may not be properly rolled, too light, too dark, smudged, smeared, or simply not readable. This requires a new set of prints to be completed and mailed in. This only causes delays with processing your application. 

• Submit to a successful FBI background check. All applicants must undergo an FBI background check.

Additional firearms safety training is not required if you still possess your expired Arizona CCW permit card. However, if your permit has been lost, damaged, or cannot be provided, you may take our Arizona CCW Certification course $59 online 24/7.
